Networking 2 buildings?
Hey all, We have 2 buildings facing each other across the street, about 175 feet apart or so, and we want them networked and I’m not sure the best way to do that, we have 1 pc with WinXP home, I figured the best way to start was to up that to XP Pro and get another pc for the second building, and from this point I’m not sure what to do next, someone suggested a line of sight network but researching this I found that its way too slow for the proprietary database software that we use, and I really dont want to have 2 internet lines, what do you guys think? cabling the two is not an option so wireless is really the only way to go, Im thinking getting a router with a SMA connector so I can connect it to an external antenna, what routers support this connector?
upgrading winxp won’t make a difference. So that is your preference, not a requirement.
You will have to purchase some wireless equipment. Specifically, you will need at least 1 wireless bridge. You could connect one computer to a wireless bridge. You could connect the 2nd computer to a wireless router. The router would be your dchp server. The router and bridge would have to be on same channel (1,6, or 11) and have same SSID. For security you could enable WEP and not broadcast the SSID. This isn’t a guarantee, but it’ll keep out the ordinary folk.
There is other fancier equipment out there. The above is a cheap solution. Do a search for senao cb3. They are cheap and have a bridge mode. You can do a search for ‘wireless access point’ and just make sure the ap has a bridge mode. I have 2 900 mhz radio, one is set up as bridge/master the other is bridge/client … they are close to 1000′ from each other. These use yagi antenna. This is an expensive solution, cost upwards to $1000 (don’t recall how much)
The antenna is a consideration. You can point 2 sector antennas at each other. You possibly could use cheap 8 db omnis for only 175′. Yagi would be overkill.

ps, if you have a phone line between the 2 buildings you can purchase ‘ethernet extenders’ .. they are low cost and really work well. I use them 1000′ over 2 little tiny copper wires. They are unbelievable!
