Light Meter Safety
Light meters are a measurement of the footcandle (fc) values of incandescent light plus other light sources. It’s very important to get accurate readings. Accurate measurements need light meters to include a low battery indicator, cosine correction, remote sensor, filters that correspond with the CIE response curve and multiple ranges. Knowing all the problems that can occur in light meters will help you compensate for error readings so you can use this tool safely.
The battery output can fluctuate, which can change the reading of the light meter. Prevent this by checking the batteries often, and use a light meter with a low battery indicator on it. It is helpful if you measure the first point once again and then compare the two values.
When the light is at an angle, light refraction can cause light meter errors. Readings can be inaccurate by 25 percent, but the cosine correction feature on the light meter will prevent those miscalculations. It is important to always keep the meter calibrated. The measurement scale will be off if the calibration is not maintained.
Like other sensors, light meters will not operate properly if they are not well taken care of. High temperatures will prevent the photoconductor sensors from working. Light meter sensors cannot be put in temperatures over 120 degrees fahrenheit or they will get damaged.
Exposure to light affects the sensitivity in the meter’s sensor. You should not remove the cover on the sensor until 15 minutes prior to using the light meter. Do not use the light meter in direct light.
Scales on the end of light meters are subject to error. This is particularly true of analog meters. Keeping a couple different fc scales on the meter is the best solution for this problem. Use the reading you see on the center scale to increase the accuracy of the reading.
A sample and hold button will prevent meter inaccuracies in meters with sensors in the readout assembly. Some of the light from these sensors is blocked by the device operator. Connect the meter and the sensor and then use the sample hold button for gathering information.
